about

"Equal parts smart, funny and poignant, all at once," says Kyle Barnett in the liner notes to this compilation by Mikes House—describing these songs written from 1986 to 1994. "Have you had a band make macaroni and cheese for you from a crock pot onstage? Then offer the results to the crowd?"

Yes, Mikes House did that. They also handed out cheap toy harmonicas during Dylan tunes for "a Bob-along," sued MTV for airing a show called Mike's House, and occasionally brought living room furniture onstage as they played all over Central Indiana, often opening for bands like The Vulgar Boatmen at places like The Patio.

"Over the years, Mikes House released three cassettes of their catchy, hook-filled tunes," writes Marc Allan in NUVO newsweekly. This compilation draws from several of their cassette-only releases and some live recordings.

Take a listen and see if you agree with Kyle and Marc. And as the chimp that often appears on Mikes House posters and stickers would say, in closing, "Vootie."

Vootie – the best of Mikes House Indianapolis, Indiana

Songs by John Sheets and/or Charlie Hopper.
Mikes House initially appeared during a peak in the Indy indie scene. “Think of a midwestern They Might Be Giants mated with Jonathan Richman after he’d spent ten years in marketing,” said The New Times, somewhat inscrutably. We recorded these songs in the late 80s/early 90s and are pleased to re-release them for streaming. ... more
